Lake Titicaca

There are some very typical tours that include overnighting with a family on the island of Amantani. However, there are also some offered that are a bit less touristy. Taquille is probably the most interesting of the islands where one can stay. There is a great walk around the island on a stone path, some pre-Inca ruins and plenty of friendly families that open up their homes for tourists to stay. The community here is known for its weaving and you will have the opportunity to learn more about their style and the significance of their patterns. On one side of the island you can visit a beautiful white sand beach.

Ica – Home of the Peruvian National Liquor

Despite Chile’s claiming pisco for its own, it seems highly unlikely that this liquor, named for a town in Peru, was not indeed born there. It is a liquor made from grapes and, like wine, can vary greatly depending on the type of grape used as well as the quality of the method used for processing it. Also like wine, therefore, it is possible to go pisco tasting to sample those differences.

The best place in Peru to go pisco tasting is Ica, the valley where most of them are produced. You can just go from place to place on your own or you can arrange a tour or, at the very least, a driver.

The famous Nazca lines are just a couple of hours away and you can also combine your trip to Ica with sandboarding at the Huacachina lagoon. From here, you can visit Paracas on the coast and make your way north to Lima.
